Debate on Nolan Ryan...

Chad, I posted the question about Nolan Ryan's ERA that we were discussing the other day on Websider. Here are a few of the comments from the thread. What are your thoughts?

"Most people don't rag on Ryan for his ERA, it's the number of losses he had. I don't know his final record, but he only won something like 15 games more than he lost. A lot of the teams he played on were awful, which somewhat explains his w/l record."

"The man had a lifetime ERA of 3.19 over 27 years. Nolan played in an era when starters finished. It wasn't like today where starters play until they pitch 100 pitches. The man simply never had any bats to back him up. 2.78 ERA with Astros in '87. Should have a pretty stinking good record, right? 8-16. Go figure. Here are some others...Tom Glavine 17 years, 3.43 ERA Orel Hershiser 18 years, 3.48 ERA Randy Johnson 16 years, 3.10 ERA Sandy Koufax 12 years, 2.76 ERA Greg Maddux 18 years, 2.89 ERA Cy Young 22 years, 2.63 ERA"

"7 no hitters, 12 1-hitters. Clemens has to strike out 300 for the next 6 years to catch his K record. he should have played for the cubs b/c he got screwed out of a lot of wins"

"how many 45 year olds do you know who could throw a 86 mph curveball?(for that matter, how many ppl at any age could do that)"

"Yes, his won-loss record is what most detractors point to. It's not bad, it's just average, or above average. You have to keep in mind though, when he played for the Angels during the prime of his career, he played on some TERRIBLE teams. The Astro teams he played on were pretty weak offensively as well. One year (88 I think) Nolan led the entire National League in ERA and had a record of 9-18. Talk about poor run support. Same thing with the Rangers. If the man had been in the Braves rotation all those years, no telling what his record would've been."

"no one will ever touch his strike out totals or his no-hitter totals. safest #'s in baseball"

"Nolan Ryan lead baseball in ERA for four years in the 80's but finished under .500 because of the crappy Astros teams he played on. He is one of the best to ever play the game."

"Nollie, said he was really embarassed by the whole Ventura deal. Nolan told Ventura as he started coming out to the mound, "son you don't want to do this". Also, funny was that just the series before, Nolan hit one of the Craig Grebecks or something with a change up, a 87 MPH changeup, but a changeup none the less. Later after Nolan was out of the game, the Sox hit a Ranger. Benches cleared, the Hawk was ragging on Nolan for not being out of the field after "Nolan Started this and then ran to the dugout". Hawk Harrelson continued by saying maybe Nolan should take on someone his one size like big Frank or Robin Ventura and not hit guys like Grebeck on purpose. BTW, It was a changeup that hit Ventura. My other favorite Nolan Ryan story is Will Clark hit a HR in his first AB against Nolan. Next at bat, he tells Alan Ashby the Stros catcher, "I can't believe I hit a HR off of a Nolan Ryan fastball." Alan responds, "That wasn't a fastball, that was a changeup".

Today for the first time in two years my store hit quota. It feels great. My team at work has worked really hard on straightening the store and servicing our customers, so it feels good to finally hit the mark set for you. Not to mention I've only been the manager for three months and we have hit quota, so that looks good for me. I know this isn't really that interesting, but I just wanted to share some good news. I hope that everybody is doing well with school or work or school and work for some of you. Anyways I'm looking forward to that next pay check with a bonus in it. Hopefully I'll be seeing some more of those. Bye!

Ode To An Anon-Poster...

Darlin' I can't explain
Where did we lose our way
Girl it's drivin' me insane
And I know I just need one more chance
To prove my love to you
If you come back to me
I'll gurantee
That I'll never let you go

Can we go back to the days when our love was strong
Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me how to get things back
They way they use to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

So many nights I dream of you
Holding my pillow tight
I know I don't need to be alone
When I open up my eyes
To face reality
Every moment without you
It seems like eternity
I'm begging you, begging you come back to me

Can we go back to the days when our love was strong
Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me how to get things back
They way they use to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

Baby, I'm sorry
Please forgive me for all the wrong I've done
Please come back home girl
I know you put all your trust in me
I'm sorry I let you down
Please forgive me

Gonna swallow my pride
Say I'm sorry
Stop pointing fingers the blame is on me
I want a new life
And I want it with you
If you feel the same
Don't ever let it go
You gotta believe in the spirt of love
It can heal all things
We won't hurt anymore
No I don't believe our love's terminal
I'm down on my knees begging you please
Come home

Can we go back to the days when our love was strong
Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me how to get things back
They way they use to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

Wanna build a new life
Just you and me
Gonna make you my wife
Raise a family

Can we go back to the days when our love was strong
Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me how to get things back
They way they use to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee

There is nothing more exhilarating than when your just chilling at work and you see a auditor pull into your parking lot. I'm talking about the store is a mess, I haven't done much of anything in two days, well let me rephrase that, I have been busy selling parts and visiting customers but not doing any of the necessary paperwork and other nensese that I have to do. There is nothing like trying to catch up on two days work in like 5 minutes. Thank goodness this women is always talking on her cell phone otherwise I would never have time to catch up. Anyways, I just thought I would let you all know that Lionel Ritchie's "Endless Love" might be the best song ever.. Ha Ha, I love the random play on iTunes nothing better than listening to Dave Matthews, Lionel Ritchie and then Ac/Dc. Well I'm off to get dressed got to go to group in a few minutes. This thing really needs a name I sound like I'm off to an AA meeting, which maybe perhaps I should attend. :)

anyone for a game of "murder"?

Ok so I don't really remember if that is what the game is called, but you have a card and a killer and a night watchman and a doctor and you try to figure out who the killer is before he kills off the whole town. So I propose a game of....whatever it is supposed to be called to find our anon-poster. I think I'll start the accusations, too. Jason hasn't posted in a really long time....

So far this month has been really cool. Work has been going well, its been busy, I have a lot of stuff on the table because the fiscal year is up in two months. So I have lots of stuff do get done, but thats all boring. I wanted to congratulate the incoming freshman, I hope that you have a good year at your schools and that you do well. You will be missed here. Anyways, what I really wanted to say was this might be the best month of the year for me, got to go see Ozomalti this past Sunday, they were incredible as always, Thomas and Jenny really seemed to enjoy maybe next time some of you will come and also hear for yourself. I was a bit disapointed that Boyz II Men was cancelled for monday night, but I'll get over that, mainly because I'm getting to go see Dave Matthews two nights in a row as most of you well know. The only thing that could make this month better is if somehow LSU football started before the end of the month, but its not too far behind. Just 17 days 17 hrs and 12 mins to go at time of post. **B.S.

so proud of you!

I would just like to say that i am so proud of Jenny for no longer forgetting to post who she is after the comments that she makes. But really, whomever is anon-posting (as I will hence forth refer to it as) should do some serious identity-disclosure before David goes postal on your...um...self (almost got caught up in the quote). And if this is Marty...I know you're all, like, new and stuff but you don't get pastoral immunity from blogger identification codes and other crap that I make up like that. Got it? Peace to all and to all a good night. -Laura

Joke from Jenny

A pirate walks into a bar missing a leg, a hand, and an eye. The bartender, recognizing him, says, "Hey! I haven't seen you in a while! What happened?"
The pirate responds, "Well, I was in a battle and my leg got blown off by a canon ball, so the doc fixed me up with this wooden leg. Then a few months later I was in a swordfight and my hand got cut off, so the doc fixed me up with this hook."
"So what happened to your eye?" asked the bartender.
"Well we were sailing on the ship and it was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. This gull came sailing across the sky and while I was looking at it, it pooped in my eye."
"Bird poop knocked your eye out?" the bartender questioned.
The pirate replied, "Well, I wasn't quite used to the hook yet."

Bye everybody! Have a great week!

confession of an impostor

i just wanted to let you in on my personal life. so here is a little bit about me.

when i was young, much like the bible's solomon, i longed for wisdom over all things. that is what i prayed for and wanted to desire more than any other virtue. it is still an aim of mine, but untill recently that aim had been lost. for a while in my teens i was blessed with an increasing capacity for wisdom, but through my sin i have lost focus on what was my strongest desire from God. wisdom is a virtue of the whole self. it requires the heart, the mind, the soul and the physical act of obedience to God's guidance. the absence of any part of this all consuming commitment ceases to be wisdom and falls into the categories of knowledge and understanding. i know and understand much, but that does not mean i relate/apply these things to my life. i am stuck being an impostor of wisdom mostly because i refuse to take my own advice. so here is my stand to restore wise living to my life. i need to tell you what clouds my thoughts and hadicaps me from being a follower of God.
it is sexual sin (and that is the watered down version of what it really is). it is porn. as Jay talked about recently, pornography being a private and personal distraction is one of great danger and i have lived in the path of danger for to long by keeping this struggle personal. it is my desire through posting this that you now know and that my struggle is no longer private, but something that others may relate to. do with this what you wish. i will be in Glorieta this week attemping to rebuild virtue and passion in my heart through a form of fasting so that i can carry it back to normal life. hope you have a good wednesday night discussion and you can use this if you want.
talk to you soon.

You know what I love, when you have your first day off in two weeks and you wake up before 9a.m. Now thats a bunch of crap, I think that I'm going to have to talk to my body about this. Well my week from hell is over my assistant comes back to work tomorrow. So that means I get to spend a lot more time in the office sitting, ha ha! I hope that everyone is doing well. David I've checked on Paco and Pixie the past couple off days, they are doing well. Although they did get really wet yesterday. I feel bad when I go there because they think they are going to get to inside, but I can't let them in, then they give me all these sad faces when I'm leaving. Well thats it for now, I'll talk to ya'll later, bye.
