Computer Lesson #2

Ok, we really need a clever name for this "computer lesson"

Understanding Wireless
As some of you might know, 802.11 is the stanard for wireless networking these days. However, the different types of 802.11 can be deceiving.

If you see 802.11 by itself, it is refering to a device that operates at speeds between 1 and 2 mbps (megaBITs per second, not megaBYTES per second -- I'll give a future lesson on this) at 2.4GHz.

802.11a operates at 5GHz and a speed of 54mbps -- it also uses a more advanced encoding scheme.

802.11b operates at 2.4GHz and a speed of 11mbps.

802.11g operates at 2.4GHz and a speed of 54mbps -- this is a much cheaper solution than 802.11a and provides similar performance.

There are others I will not mention, as these are the ones you are most likely to encounter.

There are other things you should understand before purchasing a wireless card and/or router, though. Standard ADSL in the south has a download speed between 1.5mbps and 3mbps and an upload speed between .384mbps (384kbps) and 1mbps. Cable offers some faster connections, but nothing that ever exceed 5mbps.

So, if you will be using your wireless connection only to connect to the internet, basically you'd be wasting your money buying anything other than 802.11b. However, if you wish to trasnfer files between machines on a local network, you may wish to consider 'a' or 'g'.

Hope This Helps,

I can't think of a creative name for your "computer lesson", but I do have a request for a future topic..."What to do when your computer sounds like a lawn mower." Luckily this is not too much of a problem right now, but it has been in the past and I'm sure it will in the future. Maybe you could also make a lesson on "How to get the 'John Deere, American Farmer' game to work on your computer." That would help out a lot. Maybe the most beneficial thing for me would be a topic on "How to steal someone else's really nice computer." That would be dopetastic. Well, I hope that gives you enough to work on...good luck.

I got a plan for you. Nikki said she would donate her new powerbook to the Fort. So I'm just not going to bring it to her today. Hee hee.
